Wakefield’s Favourite Is A Little Twinkle

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star has been named as the district’s favourite nursery rhyme as part of Wakefield Council’s library celebrations of National Bookstart Day.

Children and grown-ups alike were asked to vote for their favourite nursery rhyme to be announced in time for Bookstart Day on Friday 9 October.

Twinkle Twinkle was a runaway winner, with Humpty Dumpty and Incy-Wincy Spider tying in second place.

Cabinet Member with responsibility for culture Cllr Denise Jeffery said:

“Our library events are extremely popular. Well-loved rhymes and stories have an important place in children’s learning and help to develop their speech, their curiosity and their desire to learn to read. I would encourage parents of young children to get to their local libraries and see what is on offer. Children are never too young to start loving books or join our libraries and it’s great fun to get in touch with celebrations such as this.”

Karen Wilkinson, Wakefield Council’s Bookstart Coordinator, said:

“Twinkle Twinkle is just a fantastic rhyme – it’s so simple and it’s often the first rhyme a child learns the actions to. What the vote revealed was that children just love rhymes and the fun that they bring - the actions, the singing together, and, the tickles and cuddles that often accompany rhymes. Some of the children couldn’t tell us why they liked their favourite, other than saying it ‘just makes me happy’.”
