I am looking for a local history group for Pickering and surrounding villages as my grandmother grew up here. Can anyone help me please?

Hi Jane

Welcome to the Pickering Forum.

Are you looking for websites or are you looking to join a local group?

Many thanks for replies.Really wanted to see what there was either groups or online, as I do not live locally-am assuming that I could still join groups if out of the area?

Hello Jane,
The Ryedale Family History Group welcomes members from all over the world. Whilst we concentrate on families in the Ryedale area, we are able to help people to research their roots in all other places too. We have regular monthly meetings at various venues around Ryedale; one of the most popular of these venues is at Pickering. Visitors are welcome to attend a meeting - first meeting is free of charge, then if you want to attend further meetings, we do ask people to join our group. We have a research room at Hovingham which is open every Thursday, from 10am to 3pm, where there are always volunteers on hand to help with any family history enquiries. Details are on our website at www.ryedalefamilyhistory.org.
We have a quarterly newsletter or journal, called "Ryedale Roots" and we welcome any input from anyone about Ryedale families or local history, so if you have a story to tell about your family in Pickering, we would like to know please!
We are currently working on projects to transcribe parish records and registers for Pickering and Thornton Dale and other nearby parishes. The monumental inscriptions in Pickering Cemetery have already been recorded and published.
Best wishes

Hello Jane,

I'm not a group, just an individual into local history. Is there anything in particular you're looking for?

My elderly grandma comes from Pickering and is 108. She remembers being taught in a private school in Pickering, run by Miss Watson on Hungate. I think it was really a private house with very few pupils- does anyone know about this?
Grandma's story is a real slice of Yorkshire history- she has written it down in an excercise book, but due to other commitments, it is taking me ages to type.I hope to pass this info on in due course.
