Ripon Canal

Free Photos, Ripon, North Yorkshire

One of the most northerly canals in England, the short Ripon Canal runs for just two and a half miles, almost from Ripon centre to the confluence with the River Ure at Oxclose Lock.

It's a delightful walk along the towpath, passing mainly through a rural setting. The canal is mostly navigable, although it was abandoned in the mid 1950's. It is now reopened and in use today by inland craft such as narrow boats, plus canal and river cruisers.

A nice place to take a walk, pictured here toward the end of April 2009. Just before sunset.
