Old Courthouse

Free Photos, Ripon, North Yorkshire

This building, which was formerly the courthouse, dates from the 1830's and is now a Court Museum.

Just to the left of the main entrance and laid into the wall of the building, is a stone, inscribed with: OLD COURT HOUSE circa 1830. SITE of PALACE of ARCHBISHOPS of YORK.

Built to replace its mediaeval predecessor, the interior of the courtroom has not changed much since then. The court continued as a Magistrates Court until it closed in 1998.

Set in a peaceful garden just to the side of the Cathedral, the local Rotary Club have donated a seating area.
