Culture Shock Festival 2009

Event, Pickering, North Yorkshire

This year's Culture Shock Festival moved venue for the first time, to the North Yorkshire town of Pickering. The festival which is now in it's 8th year was moved to encourage other young people from around Yorkshire to become involved.

A four day festival saw a rolling array of highly talented artists including musicians, carnival type shows and art galleries.

There were several marquees with bands playing, plus a main stage where one band after another, entertained an extremely well behaved crowd of young people.

Rules included: No Adults - unless accompanied by young people. No Moshing (An aggressive crowd movement that included slamming into each other). And: No Crowd Surfing (The passing of people over the heads of the crowd). Plus the usual no drugs, alcohol or fighting. I'm glad to say, as an oldie there working as a photographer... I can report that I saw no evidence of any rule breaking, or anything that would worry most parents. On the contrary, having also attended many other festivals in my time, that have included the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who and many more, this crowd was the best behaved I have ever witnessed.

The entertainment was top notch too, with a line up that included: Stanton Warriors, Infadels, The Black Eagles, Epic, Skinnyman and many more brilliant musical artists.

Amongst the galleries and workshops there was an exhibition of photography. The exhibition displayed the development skills of a group of young people from Scarborough, they had worked under the guidance of Sarah Photogirl - a renown photographer from Scarborough. Sarah Photogirl works as a commercial photographer and has photographed some of the best known pop and rock artists including Paul Weller, Pete Doherty, Kaiser Chiefs and the Sugababes.

The most popular model in the photo gallery was none less than Naomi Harrison from Scawby, Scarborough. Naomi became involved in the project after attending the Open Arms Youth Club in Scarborough and apart from modelling, has learnt photoshop as well as photographic techniques. She is also a natural in front of the lens and needed no coaching for the photo in this article.

Sarah Photogirl said "I have loved working with this group of highly individual young people and thoroughly enjoyed the whole project."

It must be said that the Culture Shock Festival 2009 was a great success, Matt Burrows one of the main organisers of the event told me it had been a brilliant event. Back stage I spoke with many of the artists and all were clearly having a great time and enjoying both the wonderful weather and the fantastic atmosphere.

The first Culture Shock Festival in Pickering can only be said to be a complete success.
