Knowing Your Onions at the 91st Thornton le Dale Show

Event, Thornton le Dale, North Yorkshire

An estimated 20,000 people of all ages made their way to the 91st Thornton Le Dale Show yesterday and they were treated to a genuine grandstand of country events and entertainment. Everything from agricultural exhibitions, livestock and horse trials were on hand.

In the main marquee there were displays of vegetables, cookery plus arts and crafts. Just as you would expect from a country show, each category or class was judged and prizes awarded.

Then there were sheep dog trials, prior to which delighted crowds watched a detailed demonstration of sheep dog handling, as dog trainer Elaine Hill showed how she coaches her dogs, by using ducks and geese instead of sheep.

Younger children were entertained by Uncle Mike's Crazy World of Magic and other kids took part in their Junior Show Jumping Competition which included riding contests and fancy dress.

In the main arena there was a series of events including horse and cart trials in several categories. This year included a new category of Funeral Carriages which was won by Ian Smith of Beck House Carriages.

As what had been a delightful day drew towards its inevitable end, the Devil's Horsemen Theatrical Group put on a show of medieval jousting, climaxing in a dual between Sir Lancelot taking on the Black night. Sir Lancelot was unhorsed by his opponent, but regained his seat, drew his sword and finally after unhorsing the Black Knight, he beat him to the ground before kicking him in the (is that the time already).

The Grand Finale was junior games that included a tug or war and everyone who took part a winner.

It has to be said, when it comes to putting on a country show. The organisers of Thornton le Dale - really do know their onions.
