Malton is the gastronomic capital of the UK

Event, Malton, North Yorkshire

Opened by Selina Scott and declared Gastronomic Capital of the UK.

Thousands of foodies have again flocked to Malton over the weekend to hear Antonio Carluccio declare that "Malton is the Gastronomic capital of the UK".

One of the world's most highly regarded food expert's, Mr Carluccio, made his announcement as he teamed up with Tom Parker Bowles and Matthew Fort to present a cookery masterclass to a packed out audience.

Earlier in the day (Saturday), I walked with Tom Parker Bowles and Matthew Fort around the food market checking out the abundance of local produce on display. We soon met up with regular Malton Market greengrocer Graham Banks offering an abundant selection of locally grown produce. Graham didn't waste any time telling us that he's on Malton Market every Saturday and making the point that his prices are much more competitive than the local supermarkets. He said "There's FREE parking right alongside our wonderful market too, so there's really lots of good reasons for shoppers to call in to see us each Saturday and pick up a bargain."

Matthew added, "This is what we are all about, supporting local produce and it looks just fabulous to eat."

I caught up with Matthew and Tom a little later in the Milton Rooms where the beer and wine festival was taking place, not content with sampling the local beverages, they were soon behind the bar pulling pints.

By mid afternoon the area around Malton Market Place was packed to the gunnels with foodies sampling the delights on offer, and the party went right on into the evening.

The next morning (Sunday), feeling a bit groggy... I headed back into the festival arriving about 10.30am, it almost appeared as though no-one except me had gone home, the Market Place was again filling up and people were already forming long queues at the cash machines, that can only be a very good sign for the local economy.

Having only just arrived back at the festival, I was just in time to see Antonio Carluccio greeting Rosemary Shrager with a big smacker on the cheek.

Other well known demo chefs and patrons included Andrew Pern of The Star at Harome, consultant chef Stephanie Moon and Anthony Gillham of the New Malton restaurant, which he runs with his partner Gemma Williams.

It really has to be said that Malton Food Lovers Festival deserves the praise being heaped on it by food lovers from all over Europe and beyond.

But now with renown chefs such as Anthony Gillham at the New Malton and James Martin at the Talbot Hotel in town, maybe Antonio Carluccio has spotted something which many others are yet to discover about Malton.

Malton Food Lovers Festival is organised by the Malton Amenity CIC, a Community Interest Company. Its principal sponsors are Fitzwilliam Malton Estate and the Earl Fitzwilliam Charitable Trust.
