Pickering Traction Rally is Alive and Kicking

Event, Pickering, North Yorkshire

Pickering Traction Engine Rally is officially alive and kicking. Despite several challenging issues over the past few years, this time Pickering hosted one of the best traction engine rallies ever. Back in 2009 a few predicted that Pickering Traction Engine Rally was dead, this came after Arthur Harris's failed spectacular resulted in people being left unpaid and Mr Harris posting messages in forums blaming people he had employed for the failing of the company he set up to run the event.

Now three years on, Pickering Traction Engine Rally has been developed into a three day sensation of vintage vehicles, traction engines, a huge fairground plus an outstanding music festival featuring great artists, combining 60's/70's folk music with modern rock bands plus 80's punk classics.

For a few worrying hours during Saturday (the main day of events) organisers worried as the heavens opened and Pickering Showfield starting to take on the appearance of a muddy Glastonbury festival. It rained heavily for most of the day with only intermittent dry spells, then at about 4pm the rain subsided and moved away just as the crowds moved in.

On Friday the music schedule was:

Climaxing with an acoustic session performed by Ray Jackson of Lindisfarne, Fairport Convention's: Jerry Donahue and The Albion Band's: Doug Morter.

On Saturday stars of the rock world: Hazel O'Connor, ex-Simple Minds members Derek Forbes and Brian McGee, plus from 'The Jam' Bruce Foxton gave dazzling performances to the thousands of people who had braved the hostile weather conditions.

Other performers in the schedule included:

One of those nights to remember and bodes well for the future of similar events staged in Pickering.
