New Commonwealth War Grave Commission Centre at the Menin Gate

THE COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION (CWGC) is opening its first official Information Centre in Western Europe. The new centre will be located close to the Menin Gate in Ypres (Ieper).



The information office will be officially opened on Wednesday 10 May, at 4pm. Visitors are welcome to go along and meet the staff, they'll also be able to find out more about the Commission's work.

The Information Centre will be based at Menenstraat 33, 8900 Ieper, it will be open daily from Wednesday to Sunday - 2.30pm to 9pm.

The Menin Gate

One of the largest memorial sites in the world, cared for by CWGC.

The Menin Gate, is a 'Great War' Memorial arch, honouring the missing 54,395 Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient, their names are engraved into stone panels within its Hall of Memory.

A similar engraving can be found at Tyne Cot Cemetery, a location of the 3rd Battle of Ypres at Passchendaele. Passchendaele, is considered to be the location of the word fighting conditions of World War One.

2017 is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Ypres, as such the ANZAC Lions have been temporarily installed on two pillars to the side of Menin Gate on Monday this week. The Lions will return to their home in Australia after Armistice Day this year.

Passchendaele: Is now called: Passendale.
Ypres, aka: Ieper.

Tyne Cot War Cemetery is approximately 5 miles from the Menin Gate.
